Ira Mukhoty is the author of Akbar: The Great Mughal, Daughters of the Sun: Empresses, Queens and Begums of the Mughal Empire and Heroines: Powerful Indian Women in Myth and History. Living in one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, she developed an interest in the evolution of mythology and history, the erasure of women from these histories, and the continuing relevance this has on the status of women in India. She writes rigorously researched narrative histories that are accessible to the lay reader. Song of Draupadi is her first novel.
Song of Draupadi
Ira Mukhoty in conversation with Sunit Tandon
JLF First Edition is delighted to host the virtual launch of Ira Mukhoty's latest work, Song of Draupadi, published by Aleph Book Company.
Ira Mukhoty’s powerful Song of Draupadi brings a symphony of strong feminine voices to invoke the story of the Mahabharata. Mukhoty's novel is a tribute to Draupadi and the women around her as they argue, plead, reason and rise from the embers of a grand epic that often focuses only on heroic men. Going beyond Draupadi’s journey as a sister, daughter, wife and queen, the narrative observes her dreams, passion and courage as she pursues her quest of blood and vengeance. In conversation with Sunit Tandon, Mukhoty discusses her attempts to illuminate these forgotten voices and their indomitable undying spirit.
