Jerry Pinto is an award-winning poet, writer and translator. His translated works from the Marathi include Cobalt Blue by Sachin Kundalkar, Baluta by Daya Pawar, I Want to Destroy Myself by Mallika Amar Sheikh, I, the Salt Doll by Vandana Mishra, Half-Opened Windows by Ganesh Matkari, Strike A Blow to Change the World by Eknath Awad, When I Hid My Caste by Baburao Bagul and Battlefield by Vishram Bedekar. His first translation from Hindi is expected soon.
The late Vishram Bedekar’s novel, Ranaangan, published in English as Battlefield, is a searing investigation on nationalism and the redemptive power of love. Translated from the original Marathi by Jerry Pinto, the tale follows the love story between a Maharashtrian man and a Jewish girl as the world unravels within the chaos of World War 2. In conversation with publisher Ravi Singh, Jerry Pinto discusses this translation and its many layers of race, identity and a search for home.
