Sharmila Tagore began her acting career in 1957 with Satyajit Ray’s Apur Sansar and has since acted in over 100 Bengali and Hindi films, notably Nirjan Saikate, Mausam and Abar Aranye, for which she won National Awards, and Devi, Anupama, Satyakaam, Aradhana, Amar Prem, New Delhi Times, Mississippi Masala, Viruddh, Antaheen, Life Goes On, where she acted alongside her daughter Soha Ali Khan, and Break Ke Baad. In 1999, the Government of France honoured her by making her an Officer de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2012, she was conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award. In 2017, she was invited by the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to be its member. Apart from acting, she has been, and remains, actively involved in social work both in India and abroad.
