Max Rodenbeck is South Asia bureau chief for The Economist. He was born in the US but has rarely lived there. He studied history in Egypt and from 1989-2015 roamed the Middle East as a reporter, latterly as regional bureau chief for The Economist. He has authored a biography of the Egyptian capital, Cairo: The City Victorious, and often writes for the New York Review of Books.
