Maryam Aslany, a leading scholar on rural economy and society in the developing world, is a research scholar at Wolfson College, University of Oxford. Her first book, Contested Capital, offered an intimate account of India's aspiring rural middle classes, and provided a major contribution to the understanding of the global countryside. Her next book Peasants, will place the peasantry at the centre of the global story and offer a radically new account of 21st-century capitalism.
