POLITICIAN

Margaret Alva has traversed a wide canvas with many achievements to her credit. A lawyer by profession, she was first elected to Parliament in 1974 and served four consecutive six-year terms in the Rajya Sabha and one in the Lok Sabha. During her 30 years in Parliament, she served on several prestigious committees, chaired the Parliamentary committee on Empowerment of woman for five years and was part of the Indian delegation to many international conferences. She was Union Minister for ten years handling important portfolios in the governments of Rajiv Gandhi and P.V.Narasimha Rao. She served as Advisor to the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training between 2004 and 2009 while working closely with the AiCC President – Sonia Gandhi, as General Secretary in charge of eight states. Founder President of Karuna, an NGO championing the cause of women, she has been active in the Women’s Movement for over five decades. She is the recipient of several awards in India and abroad including the First Nelson Mandela Award for Minority Empowerment in New York, The Shiromani Award for her contribution to Public Life and the Global Leadership Award from Vital Voices, Washington. She has served as Governor of Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Goa and Gujarat.
