Alka Saraogi is part of the Marwari diaspora of Calcutta settled there before the First World War. Her first novel Kalikatha via Bypass won the Sahitya Akedemi Award in 2001. She is the youngest writer to win the award in Hindi so far. The novel spans a period of 150 years of several generations of Marwaris in Calcutta to become a narrative of writing the nation.
She has published six other novels, the latest being Kulbhushan ka Naam Darj Kijiye in 2020 and has two collections of short stories. She is translated into many European and regional languages.
