Vijai Singh Shekhawat retired from the Indian Navy in 1996 as the Chief of the Naval Staff and Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee. Admiral Shekhawat then became a member of the National Security Advisory Board from 1999 to 2001. He has travelled extensively and is a frequent participant in seminars on current international security issues in India and abroad. He was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1956. Senior staff appointments included ACNS (Operations), Director Ship Systems Development and Director General, Defense Planning Staff. He was Flag Officer, Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, and Vice Chief of Naval Staff.
