Ajay Navaria

Ajay Navaria is the author of the short story collections Patkatha aur anya kahaniyan (The Script and Other Stories) and Yes, Sir, and the novel Udhar ke log (People From the Other Side). An English translation of his stories, published as Unclaimed Terrain, was hailed by critics with the Guardian featuring it as one of the best books from India in 2013. His work has also been translated into Bahasa Indonesian, Chinese, French, German, Italian and Japanese. A Dalit writer, Navaria is a key player not just within Dalit literature but also Hindi literature.  While much of his writing focuses on the experience of caste, he is among the few Dalit writers able to portray with poignancy and empathy the lives and experiences of non-Dalits as well. Navaria currently works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hindi at Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi and serves as the chairperson of the Bhartiya Dalit Lekhak Sangh (Indian Dalit Writers Association).
