Despite the Civil Rights Movement of the twentieth century and changes in policy, strong undercurrents of endemic racism persist in the United States and have surfaced consistently in disturbing and heartbreaking ways over the past two years. While such trends are not new, the public exposure of the chronic and deadly maltreatment of African Americans has shaken many and brought these issues to a new level of critical and heightened awareness throughout the country.
