GulaboSapera on Being Buried Alive at Birth & Breaking Stereotypes

“I was in the stomach of my mother for 9 months and in the stomach of mother-earth for 5 hours.”

On the day of Dhanteras, an attempt was made on GulaboSapera’s life the moment she was born. Due to community pressure and the taboo of having a girl child, the women who helped birth GulaboSapera were the very women who took her to be buried. But her mother could not bear the loss and 5 hours later, at midnight, mother and aunt dug the earth and rescued her - to their relief, #GulaboSapera was alive.

‘I have two mothers: my real mother and Mother Earth’, said GulaboSapera in her conversation with Tripti Pandey at the Jaipur Literature Festival, as she talked about the hardships of growing up as a girl child in her community. Constantly taunted for years as a stigma for the society, GulaboSapera told Pandey about the obstacles that came her away as she grew up in the Kalbelia tribe and how she rose above many challenges to revive the age-old dancing traditions of her snake charming tribe.
