GulaboSapera and Tripti Pandey on How They First
Born into the Kalbeliyatribe, a young GulaboSapera was dancing at a fair in Pushkar. .Some women were getting her to dance secretly, since she was barred from dancing due to societal norms. It was at this very fair where culture icon Tripti Pandey saw her and was enamoured by her skills.
On that day, when Gulabo saw Pandey, the young girl thought that a ‘pari’ (fairy) had finally been sent for her. It was Pandey who had given Gulabo the name ‘gulabi’ because Pushkar is known for rose farming. Pandey wanted to take Gulabo to Jaipur but this caused problems within the Kalbeliya tribe, they couldn't allow for their girls to dance in public.
Gulabos’s father was thrown out of the society and obstacles kept erupting but Pandey couldn’t give up the young dancer. Her father said to Pandey’s people that Gulabo cannot be sent but upon hearing that her pari had sent people to get her - Gulabo cried in front of her brother and pleaded with him to take her to Jaipur.
They walked on foot till the highway and at 6 AM in the morning, they flagged down a bus to reach Jaipur. Upon reaching, Gulabo and her brother wandered from one location to another, searching for ‘Pari Ma’am’ and finally after reaching Teen Murti Circle, Gulabo found Pandey’s house and at that very moment, Gulabo embarked upon her inspiring journey of success.
