ARUNA ROY

Aruna Roy is a socio-political activist and Founder-Member of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan, the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information and the School for Democracy. Previously with the Indian Administrative Service, she left in 1975 to move to Rajasthan to work with the rural poor, providing them with the know-how to access and assert their constitutional rights.  She has served as a member of the National Advisory Council and was a member of the steering committee of the Open Government Partnership till 2014. She was the 2016 Professor of Practice at McGill University’s Institute for the Study of International Development and the 2016  George Soros Visiting Practitioner Chair at the Central European University in Budapest.  She is President of the National Federation of Indian Women. Her awards include the 2000 Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Nani Palkiwala Award and the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award. She was listed as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine in 2011.
